Text Dramaturgy

I offer to read through a text written for performance, casting an outside eye over your work. I will point out flaws and inconsistencies big and small, ask questions I find relevant, and generally give you an idea as to what someone who hasn't been involved in the making of the text would make of it so far. I offer help to prepare the text for the eyes of directors, actors, and theatres, and in-depth conversations about your material and its potential impact. All stages of text are welcomed, from first drafts to stage ready proposals.

Production Dramaturgy

I offer to have a look at your production in the rehearsal space. If you feel stuck, or uncertain, if you're not sure your message is coming across and everyone involved is too familiar with the piece to stand in for an audience member, that is where I come in. I offer to be on hand as often or rarely as you require, to raise concerns, pick holes, point out different readings and interpretations, or mediate disagreements. If at any point in production you need an extra pair of hands, eyes, or lungs, I am here for you.

Proofreading

Theatre pieces are not the only thing I can help with. I offer to read any text, whether creative or academic writing, and critique structure, grammar, communication, word choice, and subject matter. I don't, of course, hold encyclopaedic knowledge about any topic you might be writing on, but I can pick out what exactly you are communicating to a reader and whether this is likely to coincide with your intentions, and identify strong and weak arguments, and where your statements need more backup. In the field of theatre, I might also be able to recommend sources. Exact service varies depending on the nature, level, and topic of your text.

I also particularly offer help to those who have English as a second language. I speak Norwegian and Portuguese and am more than happy to help you translate something for the international market, or just help reassure that you feel one hundred percent confident when putting your work out there in a language you might not live your day to day life in.

Writing

I offer my services as a writer, for most varieties of commission or assistance. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in samples of my written work, or want to collaborate on a project. My writing is not limited to theatre though that is my main field; I will gladly work with you on whatever project you think I might be suitable for.

I offer to lead workshops designed to give participants both tools and inspiration to write for the stage. Workshops are malleable and can be fitted around what you would most like to get out of them. I use a series of writing exercises and collaborative work to produce pieces the participants can feel happy with, which could be brought beyond the classroom and emerge as legitimate works, or simply remain an experience useful for the group's future work both as collaborators and individual artists.

Workshops

Prices

I charge £5 for editing small texts, £10 or more for longer ones. What counts as a long or short text depends on format and medium, and this would be discussed and agreed with you before commitment. The base rate of a consultation is £10, to be negotiated upon contact. Normally, I would charge an hourly wage of £10 pounds for workshops or projects requiring continuous dedication.

For certain fringe companies I am willing to work for profit share. It should go without saying, though, that while I will do my utmost for any piece I'm involved with, if push comes to shove, I will prioritise projects with greater security of remuneration. Push is currently not likely to come to shove, so do contact me whatever your circumstance!
